Civil Marriage

The applications are submitted by the person concerned either in person (by displaying their Identity Card or Passport) at the relevant department of the Municipality, or by sending them electronically and receiving them in person.
CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY
A Civil Marriage Ceremony can be held in any Municipality or Community of the Country.
The following documents are required:
a) Joint application (applications forms are provided by the Municipality)
b) Marriage licenses for both intending spouses.
In order for the wedding ceremony to be performed, the intending spouses must have their ID cards or passports with them and be accompanied by two adult witnesses (they can be their relatives) holding identity cards. Wedding ceremonies are performed during working days and hours at the Town Hall of Platanias. (see Mayor’s Act No. 47/99).
The marriage license for each intending spouse is issued separately by the Municipality of their last residence.
- Application (application forms are provided by the Municipality)
- Photocopy of income tax declaration (Ε1) as proof of residence.
- Birth certificate translated into Greek and validated by the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The APOSTILLE stamp (Hague Convention) is required on the original document and the translation. If the country of origin of the foreigner has not acceded to the Hague Convention, the documents must be validated by the Greek Embassy in their country. If the aforementioned validation does not exist, they will be stamped by their Embassy in Greece and validated by the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs (3 Akadimias Str., Sintagma, Athens).
- Certificate of the Consulate or Embassy in Greece that there is no impediment to the marriage, which must indicate the degree of marriage (validated as to the authenticity of the signature of the consul who issued it by the Translation Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
- Passport photocopy
- Residence permit or VISA that has not expired (not required for citizens of E.U. Member States)
- In the case of a divorce, the divorce certificate (translated and validated)
- In the case of widowhood, the death certificate (translated and validated)
- If the intending spouse is a minor, a judicial decision is required (article 1350).
- Publication of the marriage announcement for one day in a daily local newspaper. The names in the newspaper should be in Greek characters, according to their official translation. (The date of the marriage is not stated in the announcement)
- Fee stamp € 15
The translation of documents must be done by:
- the Translation Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Athens).
- an authorized permanent civil servant of the corresponding Greek consular authority of the country issuing the certificate.
- a Greek lawyer who certifies that he has sufficient knowledge of the language which he translated from.
- a professional translator graduate of the Ionian University.
For Greeks residing abroad (permanently or temporarily) the license is issued by the Municipality of residence.

*The three aforementioned documents must be validated as to the authenticity of the signature by the Consul of the Greek Consulate

- Birth Certificate issued by the Registry Office
*For the Greeks born in Constantinople, Cairo or Alexandria, the Patriarchate Baptism Certificate is valid

- Publication of the marriage announcement
- Marriage License from their country confirming that there is no impediment for the person concerned to get married and stating all the necessary information of the intending spouse. For citizens of Hungary, Estonia, USA, Russia and Bulgaria, a certificate stating that there is no impediment for them to get married is required from their Consulate in Greece, translated into Greek and validated by the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs (no validation is required for the Consulate of Estonia).

- Valid passport or identity card for the citizens of E.U. Member States
The translation of documents must be done by:
- the Translation Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Athens).

- a Greek lawyer who certifies that he has sufficient knowledge of the language which he translated from.
